Fences in the Town of Castle Rock

Castle Rock's fence rules fit on an index card.

The Town keeps it short. A fence up to 72 inches tall is fine in your side and back yard. Inside the front yard setback, the cap is 48 inches. Stay at or under those heights and the Town does not ask for a building permit.

That makes it easy to think nobody checks. But your HOA or metro district may have its own fence rules, a corner lot has a sight triangle to keep open, and county lots with a Castle Rock address play by county rules. We sort that out before the first post hole gets dug.

  • Privacy fences held to 6 feet or under, so the Town's building permit rule never kicks in.
  • Front yard runs kept at 48 inches or less, per Castle Rock Municipal Code 17.52.130.
  • No barbed wire and no electric wire on a home lot, since the Town code bans both.
  • Corner lots checked against the Town's sight triangle before a single post is set.

What Castle Rock does to a fence

Four things that tip a Castle Rock fence over.

Height limits are the simple part. Frost, wind, sun and the question of town or county are where fences here go wrong.

Frost and claystone

Castle Rock's building code puts the frost line at 36 inches. Under much of town sits Dawson Formation claystone, and the Colorado Geological Survey says swelling clay can grow 10 percent or more when wet. A post that stops short rides up with it. We dig to get below the frost line.

A 115 mph design wind

The Town designs homes here for 115 mph wind, and a March 2021 storm brought 48 mph gusts and 3 to 6 foot drifts. A solid 6-foot fence catches all of it. On windy lots we use heavier posts, tighter spacing, or a style with gaps that let air through.

Town, HOA or county

Inside town, the Town's version of building code Section R105.2 lets a fence 6 feet or under skip the building permit, but zoning rules still apply. Zoning Division: 720-733-3557. Your HOA may want its own sign-off. In Keene Ranch, the county heard a change to fence rules about distance from the road in 2025, so check the current standard.

Sun and hail on the boards

Castle Rock gets more than 300 days of sun a year, and 1.25-inch hail fell here in 2019 and again in 2024. Sun turns cedar gray and hail dents soft boards. We go over stain, cedar grade, composite and metal so you know the upkeep before you pick.

Castle Rock fence jobs

Six Castle Rock fence jobs, and how we handle each one.

Each of these comes with a Town rule or a local headache attached. Here is how we deal with them.

Backyard privacy right at 6 feet

Most people want all the privacy the rules allow. In Castle Rock that's 72 inches outside the front setback. We measure from the ground along the whole run, so a fence on a slope doesn't creep past 6 feet at the low spots.

A front yard fence that stays legal

Inside the front setback, the Town caps fences at 48 inches. That means a short picket or rail fence, not a privacy wall. We mark the setback line first, so the tall section ends where it should and the short section starts there.

Corner lots and the sight triangle

On a corner, the Town keeps a sight triangle open so drivers can see cross traffic. A fence inside it can draw a code complaint and have to come down. We check where the triangle falls before we lay out a post.

Leaning fences on older streets

Founders Village homes were already there in 1990, and their fences have seen a lot of freeze and thaw. When posts lean, we check whether the old holes reached below 36 inches. If they didn't, a new post set deeper is the fix, not a brace.

Fences that meet the house

Castle Rock rates wildfire as a high hazard. Town fire staff say the first 5 feet around a home should be hard surface or rock, with no shrubs. A wood fence that runs right up to the wall works against that, so we can make the last panel by the house metal.

Acreage outside town limits

Bell Mountain Ranch and Keene Ranch use Douglas County rules, not the Town's. Lots run bigger, so fence lines run longer, and an open rail style often suits the land. We confirm the county and HOA rules for your lot first. County building office: 303.660.7497.

Castle Rock fence questions

Fence rules in Castle Rock, answered.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Castle Rock?
Usually not, if you stay inside the height limits. The Town says fences up to 72 inches are allowed outside the front yard without a permit, and up to 48 inches in the front yard. Taller fences need Town review. Your HOA may still want to approve it, and county lots follow Douglas County rules.
How tall can a fence be in Castle Rock?
72 inches in the side and back yard, and 48 inches inside the front yard setback, under Castle Rock Municipal Code 17.52.130. Rules can change, so check with the Town's Zoning Division at 720-733-3557 before you build.
Can I put up barbed wire or an electric fence in Castle Rock?
Not on a home lot inside town. The Town code bans barbed wire in every zone district, except a few strands on top of industrial security fencing, and it bans electrified fences.
How deep should fence posts go in Castle Rock?
The Town's building code sets the frost line at 36 inches. Posts that stop short of it can heave in winter, and swelling claystone makes it worse. We size the hole to the fence height and your soil.
What hours can a fence crew work in Castle Rock?
The Town allows construction tools from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. We keep our work inside those hours.
Can you fix my leaning fence instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the boards are sound, we can reset or swap the posts that moved and set them below the frost line. If most of the fence is rotted or split, we will tell you and price a new one next to the repair.
