Saddle Rock decks
Saddle Rock is built around one of Aurora's five city golf courses, out at 21705 E. Arapahoe Road. The city calls it a high-plains links course with wide native grass and big changes in elevation. That rolling ground is why so many backyards here sit up high and look out over the greens.
Golf Digest named Saddle Rock one of the 10 best new courses in America in 1998. That is great news for golfers. For a deck, it means three things. You want rail you can see through. You want the frame tall and stiff enough for a sloped lot. And you need to know which permit office and which committee your street answers to, because here that changes from one block to the next.
“After researching several local companies, they were the clear winner. The quality far exceeded the cost, craftsmanship in every square inch.”

Golf course homes come with a few extra rules and a lot of open sky. These are the four we plan around on every Saddle Rock job.
Aurora's city council handles business for the Saddle Rock South metro district, so those homes use Aurora's permit office and its Aurora4Biz portal. Saddle Rock Ranches is in Centennial, in Arapahoe County. Same name, different office. We confirm yours before we draw.
Saddle Rock is not one big HOA. Saddle Rock Ridge uses a Design Review Committee form that asks for a sketch and a planned finish date. Saddle Rock Ranches has its own ACC form. We fill out the one that fits your street.
Aurora's design rules put the frost line at 36 inches and the ground snow load at 40 psf, and the state geological survey calls swelling clay Colorado's worst geologic hazard. On a hillside golf lot, water runs to the downhill posts, so we pay extra mind to drainage there.
A fairway has few trees to slow a storm down. Colorado's hail season lasts from about mid-April into mid-August. Covering part of the deck with a roof or pergola means shade on sunny days and shelter when it storms.
“The inspector was impressed by their system and mentioned this deck is built to withstand a hurricane.”

Some homes here face the fairways, some face open space, and some face a neighbor. Each one leads to a different kind of deck, and a lot in Saddle Rock Ranches brings a different set of rules on top of that.
If your backyard opens onto the course, the rail is what you look through every day. Cable or slim metal balusters keep the greens and the native grass in sight from your chair.
The course rolls up and down, and so do many lots beside it. A deck off a raised main floor is more than 30 inches high, so Aurora asks for drawings and a framing check by the city inspector. We take care of both.
Saddle Rock Ranches has 1.5 to 3 acre lots and more than 2.5 miles of private horse trails. Decks can be bigger and spread out there. Since those homes are in Centennial, the permit path is not Aurora's, and the ACC sees the plans first.
When a deck has gray, split boards, we look at the frame before anything else. A sound frame can sometimes stay. If not, we rebuild from the footings up and finish with TimberTech or Deckorators boards.
Design committees often care more about color and style than size. We bring board and rail samples so you can pick a look and send it in with the request.
A west-facing deck can bake by late afternoon. A pergola or solid cover over part of it gives you shade. In Aurora a covered patio goes on the permit too, so we draw it in from the start.
