Best deck builders in Elizabeth, CO (2026)

Elizabeth is a small town of about 1,700 people, and lots of the homes around it sit outside town limits. That makes the list of deck builders who really know the area a short one. We build decks out here, so of course we think we are a strong pick. But here is how to judge any builder for an Elizabeth job, us included.

What an Elizabeth deck builder should know

Ask about these before you ask about price:

  • Town or county. The Town of Elizabeth permits only homes inside town limits. Everyone else goes through Elbert County in Kiowa. A good builder checks that before quoting.
  • The county's own numbers. Elbert County wants the snow load looked up for your exact address in the ASCE tool. It also lists a 115 mph design wind and a 36-inch frost line. Ask if the builder has worked with them.
  • Rural site sense. Long drives, wells, septic fields and soft ground all change how a crew gets in and where the footings go.
  • Wildfire know-how. If you live in the pines, ask how they handle the space under the deck. The state forest service suggests 1/8-inch metal mesh and nothing stored below.
  • A line-by-line estimate. You should see the decking, railing, footings, permit fee and labor each on its own line.

Five things to ask before you hire

  1. Is my address in the town or the county, and who will file the permit?
  2. What ground snow load did you get for my address?
  3. How will you brace the deck for wind on an open lot?
  4. Where are my well and septic, and how will you stay clear of them?
  5. What will you do under the deck to cut down on ember risk?

Elizabeth deck questions, answered

Do I need a permit for a deck near Elizabeth?
Most likely. Elbert County only skips the permit for a small, low, freestanding deck: 200 square feet or less and no more than 30 inches high. Inside town limits, the town makes the call.

Why do so many builders come from other towns?
Elizabeth is small, with about 1,700 people in town. SH 86 runs about 15 miles west to Castle Rock, and builders from there, Parker and Littleton all work out here. What counts is that they know Elbert County rules.

Is composite safer than wood for wildfire?
Not by itself. The Colorado State Forest Service notes that both can burn, and embers collect in the gaps. Keeping needles and stored things out from under the deck matters more.
